Gooseneck Desk Light Brightens Tasks

Need more light to see? As I get older I seem to need more light to see than I used to. And I’ve tried out several budget-friendly solutions for adding light. Finally I found a clip-on desk light in a gooseneck style that provides plenty of light and easily bends to my will.

If you are older like I am, your kitchen could have the brightest light possible in the overhead light fixture. But once you stand in front of the counter, your body creates a shadow that blocks all that wonderful light.

Let There Be More Light

It turns out, age-related changes in our eyes can cause a need for increased light to see well. The BOHON Clamp Lamp Reading Light helps me allow for these changes and throws enough light right where I need it. The BOHON LED Desk Lamp directs bright light to your kitchen counter, desk, table, or anywhere you can attach a clamp. Even if you can’t attach a clamp to your darker area, you can clamp the light to a book to make it stand upright.

We have tried a few other task light solutions, and so far the BOHON desk light provides the best brightness, dimmability, and clamping ability for us.

We also tried under-the-counter stick-on LED lights, which really didn’t give us enough light to make a difference.

So after trying others, we didn’t expect much from the BOHON Desk Lamp. But this gooseneck-style, clamp-on light surprised us.

A Bright Clamp On Light

One of the troubles we had with other products was low brightness levels. Not so with the BOHON light’s 38 tiny LED chips. The max brightness is plenty bright enough for us, even with its frosty white diffusing cover.

If it’s too bright, however, BOHON lets you choose from 10 dimmer settings and three color temperatures.

The power cord’s inline power switch contains buttons to choose Warm Light at 3000K, more natural light at 4500K, or cool white light at 6500K. Each color temperature has 10 dimming levels.

I prefer the natural light when reading on the couch, and sometimes go with the cool white for working at the kitchen counter. For just watching TV, we set it on the warm light setting and turn down the dimmer a bit.

Direct Light Where You Want

You can plug in the lamp to either a wall plug using the included AC adapter or into your computer’s USB port. The USB connection is convenient for working at your desk.

(Important: BOHON cautions to use only the included 5V/2A adapter to power the lamp. Other adapters can apparently cause damage to the light.)

The 19-inch, flexible-yet-sturdy gooseneck lets you direct the light exactly where you need it and lets you quickly change the angle whenever you want.

You could easily clip this onto your headboard to read in bed. But our head board had no where to clip it. We solved that by slightly opening a night stand drawer clipping it to the drawer.

The part that clamps onto the surface is lined with protective foam padding. Strips of soft material added to the clamp further helps protect the furniture.

As long as the lamp remains plugged in, its memory function ensures the light is at the same brightness and dimmer level it was at when you last used it.

Stretched out, the BOHON LED Desk Light measures just under two feet from the middle of the clamp to the top of the shade.

Diameter of the light shade is 3.25 inches. The gooseneck itself is 18.75 inches long. The clamp is about 4.5 inches long by about 3 inches wide. The cord measures 52 inches long.

A Senior Friendly Gadget?

Bright light with three color temperatures and 10 levels of dimming in a portable lightweight clamp lamp make this a senior friendly gadget for us.

Installing under cabinet lighting would eliminate the hanging cord and hide the light. But right now we are happy with this desk light as a budget friendly quick fix.

The foam-padded metal clamp is strong, which keeps it firmly attached to the cabinet, desk or table. I was able to open it wide enough to clamp onto different surfaces about 1/2 inch to about 1 inch thick. It can open wider, but requires more hand strength than I have. It looks like it would attach successfully to a thickness of about two inches or less.

So its portability may be somewhat limited if you have weak or arthritic hands like I do. I plan to buy another one for the desk and leave the first one attached to the kitchen cabinet. Once the clamp is attached, adjusting the gooseneck to redirect the light is not a problem for my weak hands.

This light is not meant to stand on its own. I wish it came with an attachable base that would allow it to be placed on a flat surface without falling over. The manufacturer recommends clamping it to a book as a counterweight, and that does work to keep the light upright for us. But it would add to its portability if it had a base to balance it upright.

We are happy with the black for the kitchen because all of our appliances are black. The black works on the desk, as well. But it would be great if it came in more colors.

Closing Thoughts

The BOHON LED Clamp Lamp Desk Light is a great little task light for reading, sewing, or crafting, and provides extra light for my kitchen counter workspace. The light is portable and clamps in a variety of places that you might need more light to see. I hope it lasts a long time because I plan to buy another one … or two.
